Saga of the Northlands
Clan Skjolsung is among the most powerful of the Norse clans, and certainly the most powerful of the clans hailing from Iceland. They are known to favor raids on other ships over raids on shore-based settlements, so while they are rightly feared by mainlanders they have made surprisingly few enemies unlike some other clans who favor shore raids. This tendency to raid shipping is reflected in their choice of clan totem: the berjast hvalir or “warrior whale,” the creature known in the Anglo-Saxon tongue as the narwhal.
The clan does not possess nearly enough territory in Iceland to match their population or wealth, so they are also one of the more expansionist clans. It was the ancestors of the Skjolsung clan that first discovered and settled Iceland, it was the Skjolsung clan that made the first Norse contact with many current trading partners in the far east and the far south, it was Skjolsung silver that financed the voyages of the legendary explorer Lief Eriksson, and now it is the Skjolsungs again who will be the first to settle the land of Greenland.
